State Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Makihara Attends “Regional Business Conference in YOKOHAMA” (METI)

The Regional Business Conference in YOKOHAMA, an event to attract foreign direct investment to Japan, was held in Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture. Introduced the current state of the life science field, (2) appealed the attractiveness of the life science research and development base in Yokohama, and (3) introduced JETRO as an investment support contact and called for entry.

1. About “Regional Business Conference in YOKOHAMA”

On October 9 (Wednesday), the Regional Business Conference in YOKOHAMA (sponsored by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, the City of Yokohama, and JETRO) was held in Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture to attract foreign investment in Japan. State Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Makihara attended from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.

2. Purpose and overview of the Regional Business Conference (RBC)

With the G20, Rugby World Cup 2019, and the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games as opportunities, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry will take advantage of the opportunities that will increase international attention to Japan, and promote the attractive business environment of the region to the world. As one of our efforts to disseminate information and promote direct investment, we hold Regional Business Conferences in various locations in cooperation with local governments (see 3.).
As one of these efforts, we held the “Regional Business Conference in YOKOHAMA” together with the city of Yokohama, inviting the executives of nine foreign companies (*1). Conducted business matching with domestic companies and research institutes.

(*1) Breakdown: 8 US companies, 1 German company

On the 8th, the invited foreign companies participated in business matching with member companies at a drug discovery research facility where nearby companies and universities gathered, and a group consisting of life science-related companies, etc., and proceeded with business negotiations.

On the 9th, following the top sales by the Mayor of Yokohama, State Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Makihara made a speech as one of the organizers, (1) introducing the current situation of the life science field in Japan and the magnitude of business opportunities, and (2) ) appealed the attractiveness of the life science R&D base in Yokohama City, and (3) introduced JETRO as an investment support contact point and called for expansion. After that, the foreign companies received an explanation of the investment environment in Yokohama City, visited research institutes of the city’s universities, and made pitches to the research institutes regarding their business content and future business plans. I participated in business matching and proceeded with business negotiations.

On the 10th, the invited foreign companies participated in Bio Japan 2019, Asia’s largest partnering event in the bio-business held during the same period, and presented their business details and future business plans to the participating companies. I made a pitch, etc.

A total of 83 business negotiations and interviews were held over the three days, and discussions were held on the possibility of specific collaborations.

(*2) Greater Nagoya Initiative (GNI) Council: In 2006, in order to promote the internationalization of the Greater Nagoya (GN) area, which has a radius of about 100 km centered on Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture, Gifu Prefecture, Established with top management from industry, academia and government such as Mie Prefecture and Nagoya City as members. We are working on direct investment in the GN region and creation of new business opportunities.
