Novak Djokovic (35 = Serbia), who is third in the world ranking, has won the 21st time in all four major tournaments. 4th consecutive victory in the tournament, 7th victory.
Nick Kyrgios (27), who was in 40th place and aimed to win the Australian men’s championship for the first time in 20 years since Hewitt in 2002, won a come-from-behind victory with 4 sets of 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 and 7-6. With this victory, Djokovic is close to Nadaru’s 22nd victory in all four major tournaments, with one more victory.
Djokovic has lost all two races to Kyrgios. He said he wasn’t good at playing, even though he had been playing for 17 years, saying, “I haven’t stolen a single set yet.” On this day as well, the first set burned down Kyrgios’s sharp play.
However, he thoroughly plays his own stable game to reduce mistakes until the end. He took three sets from Kyrgios, who made a lot of mistakes with a bang, and finally Kyrgios netted the back pass. Djokovic pushed his hands up and celebrated his fourth straight victory.
At this tournament, the organizer, the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC), did not allow Russia, which invaded Ukraine, and Belarusian players who supported it to participate. In protest of that decision, the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) and the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), which run tours for men and women, have not given world ranking points to the tournament.
Therefore, Djokovic won the championship, but there is no point added this year. The 2000 points earned by winning last year will just disappear, and will fall to 7th place in the latest world ranking scheduled to be announced on the 11th.
Djokovic will fall from the top five for the first time in about three years and 11 months since he was sixth in the week of August 27, 2018.
